Copilot for Finance: What Australian Teams Need to Know

Microsoft 365 Copilot is a generative AI assistant embedded across Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Copilot for Finance is the finance-specific version, designed to work within Excel, Outlook, and Teams for financial workflows. For Australian finance teams already in the Microsoft ecosystem, it’s worth understanding what it actually does versus what the marketing implies.

What it does

In Excel, Copilot generates formulas from natural language descriptions via the =COPILOT() function. Ask it to write a formula that calculates a 3-month rolling average excluding outliers, and it builds it. For finance teams that spend time constructing complex conditional logic, this is genuinely useful. Copilot in Excel also answers questions about your spreadsheet data in plain English – "what are the top five cost categories by variance this month?" – and can help scaffold financial model structures.

In Outlook, Copilot summarises long email chains, generates draft responses, and helps prepare for finance meetings by pulling relevant context.

In Teams, it generates meeting summaries and action items from finance team discussions.

For organisations on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance – not Xero – Copilot goes further. It can query live ERP data, assist with reconciliation, and support period-end tasks directly within the ERP environment.

What it doesn’t do

Copilot doesn’t connect directly to Xero. For Australian businesses on Xero – which is the majority of SMEs and mid-market businesses – the Dynamics 365 integration is irrelevant. The value is in what Copilot does within Excel and Outlook.

It doesn’t handle AP automation. Copilot doesn’t capture invoices, extract data, route for approval, or sync to Xero. It assists with analysis and communication once data is already in your system.

And it doesn’t replace the need for accurate underlying data. Copilot works on what’s in your spreadsheets. If your Xero AP data is incomplete or delayed, the analysis Copilot produces in Excel reflects that.

Where it’s actually useful for Australian Xero practices

Excel formula work is the most immediately useful application for most Australian finance teams, regardless of ERP. The =COPILOT() function generates complex formulas without copy-pasting from Google – useful for lookups, conditional logic across multiple criteria, and data transformation.

Variance analysis in Excel is the second area. Paste P&L data and ask Copilot to identify significant variances and explain them. Produces a starting point for commentary faster than manual analysis, though the numbers still need checking against source data.

Email drafting in Outlook is useful for standard financial correspondence – payment follow-ups, financial update emails, responses to supplier queries. Copilot reads the email thread context and drafts a relevant response.

Copilot vs ChatGPT vs Claude for Australian finance work

The honest answer is that each tool is better for specific tasks.

Copilot is the right choice for anything inside Excel or Word – it stays in the tool you’re already using, no copy-paste. For ATO correspondence and anything requiring accuracy and nuance, Claude produces better output. For quick drafts and short tasks, ChatGPT is faster. Cost and availability in Australia

Microsoft 365 Copilot is available in Australia as an add-on to Microsoft 365 Business and Enterprise plans. It’s priced per user per month on top of existing Microsoft licences.

Copilot for Finance – the Dynamics 365-specific version – requires Dynamics 365 Finance and a separate licence. For Australian businesses on Xero, this version doesn’t apply.

The AP automation gap
